Types of Passports

The Indian government issues different types of passports based on the traveler's eligibility:

Eligibility Criteria for a Passport

To apply for a passport in India, applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements based on their age and citizenship status.

• Indian Citizens (18 years and above): Eligible to apply for a standard adult passport with a validity of 10 years.
• Children below 18 Years: Eligible for a passport with a validity of five years or until they turn 18 years, whichever comes earlier.
• Children aged 15 to 18 Years: Have the option to apply for a 10-year validity passport if preferred.
• Parents' Application for Minors: Parents or legal guardians can apply for a minor's passport, choosing either a 5-year passport or validity until the child turns 18.

Documents for Passport

When applying for a passport, you must submit specific documents. Choose one document from the Proof of Address list and submit the appropriate Proof of Date of Birth document based on your date of birth.

1. Proof of Address (Choose one): Water Bill, Telephone Bill (Landline or Post-paid Mobile), Electricity Bill, Income Tax Assessment Order, Election Commission Photo ID Card, Gas Connection Proof, Certificate from Employer (for reputed companies), Spouse's Passport Copy, Parent's Passport Copy (for minors), Aadhaar Card, Rent Agreement, Bank Passbook from Scheduled Banks.
2. Proof of Date of Birth (For births before October 1, 2023 - Choose one): Birth Certificate, School Leaving Certificate or Matriculation Certificate, PAN Card, Service Record (for Government Employees), Driving License, Election Photo Identity Card, Insurance Policy Bond.
3. Proof of Date of Birth (For births on or after October 1, 2023): Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths (mandatory).

Passport Processing Time

The time taken to process a passport application in India depends on the type of service chosen, with faster options available for urgent needs through the Tatkaal scheme.

Register for a Passport Application

Registration is the first step to apply for a passport online through the Passport Seva Portal.

1. Visit the official Passport Seva Portal.
2. Click on the "New User? Register Now" option on the homepage.


3. Fill in the required personal details, including name, date of birth, and email address.
4. Select the Passport Office (PSK or RPO) under whose jurisdiction your current address falls.
5. Create a unique login ID and password for your account.
6. Enter the Captcha displayed and click ‘Register’.
7. Activate your account through the link sent to your registered email ID.

Tip: Use an active email and mobile number to receive updates on your application status.

Apply for a Passport

You can apply for a passport both online and offline. Applying online is the quickest and most popular way to obtain a passport in India.

Steps to Apply for a Passport Online

1. Complete your registration through the Passport Seva Portal.
2. Log in and select "Apply for Fresh Passport/Reissue of Passport."
3. Fill in the application form accurately, including personal, family, address, and emergency contact details.
4. Upload the necessary documents if the portal asks.
5. Pay the application fee using online payment methods.
6. Book your PSK appointment and visit with original documents for verification.

Tip: Save a soft copy of your application receipt for future reference.

Steps to Apply for a Passport Offline

Offline application is suited for applicants who prefer manual form submission.

1. Obtain the passport application form from the nearest Passport Seva Kendra or authorized post office.
2. Fill out the form manually with accurate details.
3. Attach photocopies of required documents along with originals for verification.
4. Submit the form and documents at the designated counter.
5. Pay the application fee in cash or as instructed.
6. Schedule your verification appointment.

Book a Passport Appointment

After submitting the application form, the next important step is booking an appointment for document verification.

1. Log in using your registered ID on the Passport Seva Portal.
2. Click on "View Saved/Submitted Applications."
3. Select your completed application and click on "Pay and Schedule Appointment."
4. Make the payment using available online payment options like credit/debit card, net banking, or UPI.
5. Choose a convenient Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) location and available time slot.
6. Confirm your appointment.

Note: Carry the payment receipt with you when visiting the PSK.

Reschedule Passport Appointment

If you cannot attend the originally booked appointment, you are allowed to reschedule it a limited number of times.

1. Log in to your Passport Seva Portal account.
2. Go to "Manage Appointment" under the Services menu.
3. Select your existing appointment and click on "Reschedule Appointment."
4. Choose a new PSK center and preferred date and time.
5. Confirm and save the new appointment details.

Important: You can reschedule only two times after the first booking, so plan carefully.

Passport Document Verification

Verification of original documents is a main step in the passport application process to confirm the authenticity of the applicant’s identity, address, and personal information.

Key Points:

• It is mandatory to carry original documents during your visit to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office (RPO).
• Verification officers will cross-check the details submitted online or offline with the originals you present.
• Police verification may be initiated after document verification, depending on the type of application.
• Submission of mismatched or fake documents can lead to rejection of the passport application.

• Proof of Address (e.g., Aadhaar Card, Electricity Bill)
• Proof of Date of Birth (e.g., Birth Certificate, School Leaving Certificate)
• Identity Proof (e.g., PAN Card, Voter ID)
• Previous Passport (for renewals or reissue cases)

Check Passport Application Status

After submission, you can track your passport application status online at any time.

1. Visit the Track Application Status Page.
2. Enter your 15-digit Application Reference Number (ARN) and Date of Birth.
3. Click on "Track Status."
4. View the latest updates, including police verification, dispatch, and delivery status.

Passport Renewal

Renewing a passport is essential to maintain an uninterrupted travel history. Renew your passport well before its expiry date to avoid any travel disruptions.

Key Points:

• Renewal is needed for expired passports or if significant changes occur (like a name change).
• Submit both the old passport and the new supporting documents.
• Renewal under Tatkaal is possible for urgent cases.
• Police verification may be required based on the renewal reason.

Steps to renew a Passport

1. Log in to the Passport Seva Portal.
2. Select "Apply for Re-issue of Passport."
3. Fill in the new information (especially if your address or name has changed).
4. Upload updated documents if needed.
5. Pay the renewal fee and schedule an appointment.
6. Visit the PSK for verification and the biometric process.

Passport Validity & Expiry

The validity of an Indian passport depends on the applicant's age and the number of pages issued, ensuring that the document remains updated and accurate for international travel.

The Tatkaal Passport Scheme offers a faster way to obtain a passport for applicants needing urgent travel, without waiting for police verification before dispatch.

Police verification is a crucial step in the passport process to confirm an applicant’s identity, address, and background before or after issuing the passport.

India Post Passport Delivery

After your passport is issued, it is dispatched through India Post’s Speed Post service. With Speed Post Passport Tracking, applicants can easily monitor the delivery status and ensure safe receipt of their passport at the registered address.

The mPassport Seva app, launched by the Ministry of External Affairs, brings passport-related services to mobile users, making the entire process more accessible and efficient through smartphones.
