At Semicon 2025, Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said,

In a short span of 3.5 years, we have the world looking at India with confidence. Today, the construction of five Semiconductor units is going on at a rapid pace… We just presented the first “Made-in-India” chip to PM Modi…

after presenting India’s first fully indigenous Vikram 32-bit processor to PM Modi.

The Prime Minister confidently addresses the nation, stating that

The day is not far when the world will say, ‘Designed in India, Made in India, Trusted by the World’”.

The latest progress includes the following details:

  • AMD announced a $400 million investment to build India’s largest design centre.
  • SEMICON India 2025 highlights 10 major approved projects, including high-volume fabs, packaging, compound semiconductors, and OSATs—a 1.6 lakh crore investment across six states.
  • CG-Semi just opened one of India’s first full-scale OSAT pilot facilities in Sanand, Gujarat.
  • The Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme has funded 23 chip design projects for startups.
  • New 3-nanometre chip design centres launched in Noida and Bengaluru mark a leap in advanced chip design.

Why Is Semiconductor A Big Fuss

In 2025, it is an inevitable fact that semiconductors are going to be the major player in humanity’s development. How?

Semiconductors power everything from smartphones to satellites, and their strategic value is only growing as AI, electric vehicles (EVs), and advanced connectivity demand more chips than ever.

Here are a few examples of how development in semiconductors made the difference:

  • 10 years ago, cars had about 50 chips, not for driving but for other functions. Now, EVs like Tesla use over 3,000 semiconductor chips and are fully electric.
  • In 2000, processors were running on 180 nm technology. Today, smartphones run on 3 nm chipsets powering AI apps.
  • 20 years ago, MRI scans took hours. Now, with semiconductor tech, results come in minutes.
  • A decade ago, India had 20 million digital transactions/month. Now, UPI handles 12 billion/month, enabled by chips.
  • In the 1990s, factories had less than 10% automation. Now, with semiconductor-powered robotics, automation exceeds 70% in many industries.

Let’s not go into space and other areas, where electronics and semiconductor technologies have made miracles.

In India, buzz over Semicon 2025 highlights how chipmaking is now central to self-reliance, economic growth, and global influence.

Influence of SCO and China

PM Modi’s recent presence at the SCO summit in China and talks with the Chinese President Xi Jinping sparked a wide hope in the minds of industrialists and nationalists, especially in the close quarters with the Semicon 2025.

China pledged a $2 billion grant for technological cooperation, and both nations discussed AI and semiconductors during high-level SCO sessions. This points to strengthening cross-border research and supply chain integration, potentially softening the competitive edge and inviting strategic partnerships.

The key point is that India, with its biggest population, is also one of the biggest consumers in the world, while China is one of the biggest producers. A development in cross-border trading could prove positively beneficial for both countries, considering the punishing tariffs of the USA on both.

Challenges, Risks & Financial Readiness

India’s semiconductor ascent is not without hurdles, as this is a big step. Some major issues out of the many that the country could potentially face are:

  • Supply chain dependencies on raw materials and specialised talent
  • Geopolitical uncertainties, especially with frequent shifts in US-China-India dynamics
  • The evolving regulatory framework and global competition

For businesses and investors, prudent risk management is key. Financial agility, possibly supported by a timely credit score check before leveraging new investment channels, will determine who thrives in this competitive landscape.

Preparing for the Next Chip Wave

Semicon 2025 marks more than a yearly conference; it is the signal that India is ready to lead in the global semiconductor race.

This could potentially mean a lot of job opportunities as well, which can be a relief amidst the increasing layoffs and job takeovers due to AI intervention. According to government sources, projects like CG Power’s facility alone will generate over 5,000 jobs. The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is actively training over 60,000 students and aims to develop one million additional skilled workers by 2030.

The government is aiming to make a long-term development through which the country can develop into a global power by 2030.

The era of ‘semicon park’ and homegrown chip champions is here, but success will hinge on collaboration, foresight, and financial preparedness.

The opportunity? Enormous.

The rewards? For those ready to act, even greater.
