History of Kanakadasa Jayanthi

Kanaka Dasa, originally named Thimmappa Nayaka, was born in 1509 in Baada village near Bankapura in the present-day Haveri district of Karnataka. He lived until 1609, leaving behind a literary legacy that reshaped Kannada devotional culture. Initially, he was a warrior and chieftain of the Kuruba community under a local ruler. After suffering a near-fatal injury in battle, Kanaka Dasa renounced his warrior life and dedicated himself to spiritual pursuit and devotion to Lord Krishna.

He later became a disciple of Sri Vyasatirtha, one of the leading Dvaita Vedanta philosophers. Kanaka Dasa joined the Haridasa movement, which sought to bring devotion (bhakti) closer to the common people through vernacular language and music. His Keertanas, Ugabhogas, and Devaranamas are simple and melodic compositions in Kannada. They taught humility, devotion, and social equality.

Kanaka Dasa’s message transcended caste boundaries and emphasised that true devotion lies in character and compassion, not in birth or status. Over time, as his fame spread, communities began to celebrate his birth anniversary informally. The Government of Karnataka officially declared Kanakadasa Jayanthi as a state holiday in 2008, granting formal recognition to his spiritual and cultural influence.
