India’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a government program that provides free LPG connections to families below the poverty line. This helps them switch from traditional cooking fuels like firewood to cleaner options.

With the launch of PMUY 2.0, an extra 1.6 crore LPG connections are being offered, including to migrant families. This brings the total connections under the scheme to 9.6 crore, making LPG more affordable and accessible to more households across the country.

Overview of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The scheme was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh while empowering women to work with cleaner fuels and prevent the hassles of collecting firewood causing more health hazards, thus streamlining and benefiting both the environment and the women on the rural tiers of the country.

Features of PMUY

Free LPG Connection: Eligible households receive a free LPG connection, helping them access cleaner fuel. To cover the security deposit and installation charges while providing a financial subsidy of Rs. 1600 per connection.

Target Group: The scheme primarily benefits women from BPL families, aiming to improve their health by reducing smoke-related respiratory issues.

Loan Facility: Beneficiaries can avail a loan to cover the cost of the stove and the first refill.

Expansion: The scheme has been extended to include all SC/ST households, forest dwellers, and other marginalised groups under the Ujjwala 2.0 initiative.

Benefits of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The Government of India provides cash assistance for PMUY connections – Rs. 2200 (for a connection 14.2kg cylinder/ Rs. 1300 for a 5 kg cylinder). The cash assistance covers:

• Security Deposit of Cylinder – Rs. 1850 for 14.2 kg cylinder/ Rs. 950 for 5 kg cylinder
• Pressure Regulator – Rs. 150
• LPG Hose – Rs. 100
• Domestic Gas Consumer Card – Rs. 25
• Inspection/ Installation/ Demonstration charges – Rs. 75

Additionally, all PMUY beneficiaries will be provided with the first LPG refill and stove (hotplate) free of cost with their deposit-free connection by the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Eligibility Criteria

• Adult women belonging to any of the following categories.
  • SC Households
  • ST Households
  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin)
  • Most Backward Classes
  • Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)
  • Tea and Ex-Tea Garden tribes
  • Forest Dwellers
  • People residing in Islands and River Islands
  • SECC Households (AHL TIN)
  • Poor Household as per 14-point declaration
• Applicant must have attained 18 years of age.
• There should not be any other LPG connections in the same household.

Documents required for PM Ujjwala Yojana

• Know Your Customer(KYC)
• Ration Card issued by the State from which application is being made/ other State Govt. document certifying family composition/ Self-Declaration as per Annexure I (for migrant applicants)
• Aadhaar of the beneficiary and adult family members appearing in the document at Sl. 2
• Proof of Address – Aadhaar will be taken as Proof of Identity and Proof of Address if the connection is required in the same address. In that case, only Aadhaar is sufficient.

PM Ujjwala 2.0 is an extension of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), aimed at providing free LPG connections to poor households. The scheme simplifies access for migrants with a self-declaration process for address proof and includes a free first refill. By promoting cleaner cooking fuel, it reduces health risks associated with traditional methods like burning wood or cow dung, and helps lower air pollution.
